China Semiconductor Campus Hiring 2027: Pay Bands | SunTzu China
725 roles against 1,270 students at China's 2027 IC campus fairs. Pay bands by degree and job family, city benchmarks and what it means for foreign employers.

Data as of October 10, 2026
One. Total volume is not the constraint; the shape of the role list is. At the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integrated circuit fair in Yizhuang, 41 employers posted 725 roles against 1,270 registered students, taking more than 4,000 CVs and recording 1,066 on-site expressions of interest. That works out to 0.57 roles per student and 5.5 applications per role. At another university, a single printed-circuit-board and packaging company posted 657 roles in one visit. Role counts are spread extremely unevenly, which runs against the intuition of a general shortage.
Two. The pay spread is set by degree tier and job family together, not by employer brand. Merged across six published postings, technician roles at the diploma tier start at CNY 60,000 to 120,000 a year; research assistant and equipment engineering roles at the bachelor tier at CNY 80,000 to 210,000; chip development and process roles at the master tier at CNY 150,000 to 350,000; and architecture and device research roles at the doctorate tier at CNY 350,000 to 600,000, with the top of the band reaching higher.
Three. The bachelor-tier gate is held at roughly CNY 100,000 a year. MyCOS data for 2026 puts the average monthly income of microelectronics graduates six months after graduation at CNY 7,814, first among all undergraduate majors and about 21% above the CNY 6,435 average across all graduates. Employer postings cluster bachelor starting pay between CNY 100,000 and 210,000 a year. The design and verification track opens mainly at master level, so bachelor graduates enter through packaging and test, process, equipment maintenance and layout roles.
Four. Industrial clustering is displacing university ranking as the pricing variable. Shanghai hosts more than 1,200 integrated circuit companies and roughly 40% of the country's industry talent. Wuxi's high-tech zone reports CNY 180 billion of integrated circuit output, with the city's 376 large-scale enterprises turning over CNY 130.8 billion in the first half, up 16.3%. The share of microelectronics graduates staying to work in Shandong rose from 45% in 2023 to 68% in 2025. Where the industry sits now reprices where the graduates go.
1. From a China semiconductor talent gap argument to a structural reading
Start with the demand floor. World Semiconductor Trade Statistics puts global semiconductor sales at USD 700.9 billion in 2025, up 11.2%. The China Semiconductor Industry Association reports that domestic chip design revenue reached CNY 835.73 billion in 2025, up 29.4% and past USD 100 billion for the first time. Mainland China now holds about 34.4% of global wafer fabrication capacity, the largest share of any region. The industry is expanding, so the floor under hiring demand is not in dispute.
What is changing is the shape of that demand. In the month after the 2026 Spring Festival, recruitment-platform data put the demand-to-supply ratio for digital backend engineers at 6.43, the tightest of any role tracked, while postings for analog layout engineers rose 274% year on year, the fastest growth on the platform. Recovery in traditional consumer-electronics chip design roles was far more limited. The rebound is therefore structural, concentrated in a handful of directions, and no broad-based rise across the whole industry has appeared.
Two leading wafer fabs give the scale reading for wafer fab hiring China. SMIC's 2027 campus programme lists 27 roles spanning technology development, circuit design, process engineering, equipment and intelligent manufacturing, open to bachelor, master and doctorate tiers; Hua Hong Group plans to hire more than a thousand people in its 2027 autumn intake. The leading fabs are indeed adding volume, but the role mix is weighted toward engineering and manufacturing, with design roles a limited share of the total. That is the first clue to where the mismatch sits.
SMIC's 2024 annual report adds a finer layer: 19,186 employees in total, of whom 2,330 are R&D staff, or 12.1%, with average R&D staff pay of CNY 529,000, up 12.79% year on year. That is the workforce profile of a capital-intensive manufacturer, where R&D is a little over a tenth of headcount and the rest sits in process, equipment, manufacturing and support functions. Wafer fab hiring volume comes from that layer, and it looks nothing like the workforce structure of a design house.
A different picture emerges from another class of employer. In its 2027 campus programme, a compound semiconductor foundry lists postdoctoral and young top-tier talent at CNY 400,000 to 600,000 a year, junior chip development engineers at master level at CNY 250,000 to 350,000, process engineers at master or doctorate level at CNY 150,000 to 250,000, research assistants and equipment engineers at bachelor level at CNY 80,000 to 150,000, and chip technicians at diploma level at CNY 60,000 to 120,000. Inside a single company's role list, degree tier stretches pay into five steps, with each adjacent pair separated by a factor of 1.5 to 2.
At one end, degree gates are moving up. The design track opens mainly at master level: in 2027 postings, design roles open to bachelor graduates are limited, while doctorate holders can apply for architecture and device research. At the other end, employers are raising what they expect a graduate to be able to do on day one. University-industry feedback is consistent on this point: institutions have expanded programmes designed around research roles, while employers need people who can work directly on tools and processes. The two are not in conflict. The gate sits at master level because employers have stopped paying a full premium for candidates who need two to three years of development, and instead require project or tape-out experience before graduation.
2. Job-family benchmarks: bands, midpoints and upper bounds
The table below groups roles from six employer postings by job family and gives the starting-pay band and band midpoint. One caveat comes first. Employer postings state self-reported starting pay, exclude performance pay, year-end bonus and equity, and are not necessarily the final terms of an offer. The table therefore gives bands and midpoints calculated from those bands, not a percentile distribution. The IC design engineer salary China row carries the widest spread in the set.
| Job family | Typical degree | Starting band | Band midpoint | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IC design (digital and analog circuit design) | Master, doctorate | CNY 250k-800k per year | CNY 350k-500k per year | Bitmain (Beijing), Shanghai Chip Innovation Center, 2027 postings |
| Electronic design automation and algorithms | Bachelor, master, doctorate | CNY 200k-600k per year | CNY 300k-450k per year | HuaXinJuShu (Hangzhou), 2027 posting |
| Compound semiconductor process and devices | Master, doctorate | CNY 150k-600k per year | CNY 250k-450k per year | Bokang Semiconductor (Jiaxing), 2027 posting |
| Wafer fab process and equipment engineering | Bachelor and above | CNY 120k-250k per year | CNY 140k-200k per year | SMIC, Hua Hong Group, 2027 postings |
| Semiconductor equipment engineer, electrical hardware | Master | CNY 180k-300k per year | CNY 200k-240k per year | Fuxiyuan Semiconductor (Shanghai), 2027 posting |
| Packaging, test, layout and design-for-test | Bachelor, master | CNY 100k-210k per year | CNY 120k-150k per year | Taixin Semiconductor (Zhuhai), Yuanzhuo Micro-Nano, 2027 postings |
| Microelectronics graduate employment, major-level reference | Bachelor | Average monthly income CNY 7,814 | First of all undergraduate majors | MyCOS, 2026 Chinese Undergraduate Employment Report |
Finding one: the spread between job families exceeds the spread between employers. In the same set of postings, the top of the IC design band reaches CNY 800,000 a year while the top of the packaging and layout band sits at CNY 210,000. Which job family a graduate applies to affects starting pay more than which company they apply to. This is also the most direct price projection of where the hiring difficulty sits: the roles that are hard to fill and the roles that command a premium point to the same job families.
Finding two: the top of the design band is set by employer type. Expand the design band and the postings at the upper bound cluster in two groups: compute and application-specific chip design houses, and new-type research institutes. Both organise work by project rather than around production capacity, so they are willing to pay clearly above market for a small number of architecture and device specialists.
Finding three: major-level and role-level figures cannot be mixed. The last row of Table 1 is a major-level figure, meaning average monthly income six months after graduation; the other rows are role-level figures, meaning self-reported employer starting pay. Subtracting one from the other produces the nonsensical reading that the same cohort of graduates is on CNY 8,000 a month and CNY 30,000 a month at once. The usable method is to split first by degree and job family, then compare bands within a layer. Cross-layer comparison yields a multiple; only same-layer comparison yields a market rate.
First, fix the degree tier. The bachelor midpoint sits around CNY 100,000 a year and the master-level design midpoint around CNY 300,000; the gap between them is a multiple, and describing it as a percentage understates it. Second, fix the job family. Inside one company, process and design starting pay can differ by more than double, so the family matters more than the employer. Third, read what the posting leaves out. Employer postings normally exclude performance pay and equity, and shift and project allowances at fabs and equipment makers are often not folded into the posted annual figure, so comparing offers on posted pay alone understates what manufacturing roles actually pay.
3. Splitting by degree tier: four price curves inside one major
The previous section split the market by job family; this one splits it by degree tier. The practical reality of microelectronics graduate employment is that graduates from the same cohort face entirely different role lists depending on their degree. Across the same 2027 postings, degree is a stronger pricing variable than major. The table below merges the six postings by degree tier and gives the starting band, the midpoint and the roles attached to each tier.
| Degree tier | Starting band | Band midpoint | Typical role list | Sample employers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diploma | CNY 60k-120k per year | CNY 80k-90k per year | Chip technician, line operation and equipment maintenance | Bokang Semiconductor (Jiaxing) |
| Bachelor | CNY 80k-210k per year | CNY 120k-150k per year | Research assistant, equipment engineering, packaging and test, layout, application support | Bokang, Taixin Semiconductor, Yuanzhuo Micro-Nano |
| Master | CNY 150k-350k per year | CNY 220k-300k per year | Chip development, process engineering, design verification, digital backend, algorithms | Bokang, Shanghai Chip Innovation Center, HuaXinJuShu |
| Doctorate | CNY 350k-600k per year, extending above CNY 1m | CNY 400k-550k per year | Chip architecture, device research, postdoctoral and young top-tier talent tracks | Bokang, Shanghai Chip Innovation Center, Bitmain |
Observation one: the steps between degree tiers are multiples, and they are not even. Bachelor to master is roughly two times and master to doctorate about 1.8 times, while the spread inside the doctoral tier, from CNY 350,000 to above CNY 1 million, exceeds the gap between the two tiers below it. Pricing power is therefore completing its stratification inside the doctoral tier, where the scarcity of a research direction matters more than the degree itself. For 2027 graduates, consistency of research direction counts for more than consistency of major title.
Observation two: the design gate sits at master level, and the process gate sits at breadth of major. Leading fabs cover bachelor, master and doctorate tiers in their 2027 role lists, but the design gate opens mainly at master level and bachelor graduates enter through process, equipment, packaging and test roles. Bachelor candidates therefore have a limited number of design roles open to them at any single fair, and applications concentrate on the few that are, creating the appearance of intense competition on the design side while process and equipment roles stay chronically under-subscribed because of location and shift patterns. Same students, same fair, opposite experiences, and the reason is where the gate line sits.
Observation three: there is a gap between posted annual pay and actual outlay. Chinese employers typically issue campus offers on a 13- or 14-month basis, plus project bonus, shift allowance and housing allowance, with employer social insurance and housing fund contributions on top. On roles paying below CNY 10,000 a month, the distance between the posted figure and what a candidate actually receives can exceed 20%. Treating posted annual pay as a comparable basis across companies systematically overstates the appeal of lower-paid roles and understates the real gap at higher-paid ones, because variable pay is a larger share of the total at the top.
4. Clustering and price: how location reprices the same CV
The third dimension is geography. Semiconductors are among the most vertically specialised manufacturing industries, and the same CV reaches a different number of roles at a different price depending on whether the candidate sits inside an industry cluster. The table sets cluster metrics against 2027 starting-pay anchors for five regions, listing pay anchors only where a comparable published posting exists.
| Region | Industry position | Cluster metric | 2027 pay anchor | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai | Design, manufacturing, equipment, materials and tools | More than 1,200 IC companies; about 40% of national industry talent; 2025 output about CNY 580bn, up more than 15% | Hardware engineer CNY 15k-20k per month | Kankan News; 2027 employer postings |
| Beijing | Semiconductor equipment and compute chips | Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei IC fair: 41 employers, 725 roles | Process and equipment roles CNY 12k-18k per month | Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area; SMIC 2027 posting |
| Shenzhen | Design-led, with manufacturing and packaging build-out | SMIC's Shenzhen site running 8-inch and 12-inch lines in tandem | R& D roles CNY 130k-400k per year | SMIC; Fengta Technology 2027 postings |
| Wuxi | Wafer fabrication, packaging and test, equipment and materials | High-tech zone IC output CNY 180bn; 376 large-scale city enterprises at CNY 130.8bn in H1, up 16.3%; more than 150,000 specialists | — | Wuxi municipal government website |
| Suzhou | Design and specialist equipment | Local employers opening design and equipment roles in the 2027 cycle | Bachelor CNY 120k-200k; master CNY 180k-300k per year | Yuanzhuo Micro-Nano 2027 posting |
| Xi'an | Compound semiconductors and power devices | Joint compound semiconductor research institute with Xi'an Jiaotong University | Postdoctoral and young top-tier talent CNY 400k-600k per year | Bokang Semiconductor 2027 posting |
Finding one: Shanghai's cluster metric measures optionality. More than 1,200 companies and about 40% of national industry talent mean a graduate can test design, manufacturing, equipment, materials and tools inside one city. For candidates who have not fixed a direction, that optionality is worth more than a pay premium in any single segment. For those who have, the value shifts to whether the leading employer in that segment is local.
Finding two: manufacturing pay is comparable across cities. SMIC posts the same role at the same band across several cities in its 2027 cycle. For capital-intensive manufacturers, the pay difference for an equivalent role comes mainly from shift patterns and performance pay, and the city variable is limited. Design pay, by contrast, depends more on employer type and cluster, so city differences there are wider. When sizing a candidate's pay ceiling, read the job family first and the city second, and keep that order.
Finding three: the gap between coastal clusters and inland cities is narrowing, but they take on different functions. Xi'an takes on research, with employers building institutes with universities and pricing doctorate talent at postdoctoral levels. Cities such as Zhengzhou take on manufacturing and training, expanding enrolment and building industrial bases to match line demand. The difference in workforce structure between regions explains graduate flows better than the difference in pay does.
5. Five trends already visible in the data
Stack the four readings together and five directional judgements follow. Each is a change already observable in public data, so readers can track it on a consistent basis.
The demand increment sits at both ends. On the design side, analog layout postings rose 274% year on year and the digital backend demand-to-supply ratio reached 6.43, marking the later stages of the design chain as the tightest. On the manufacturing side, fab roles are mostly engineering and manufacturing posts that can be filled in batches by degree tier. The two sets of roles pull requirements in opposite directions: design roles converge on master level and above, while manufacturing roles demand breadth across mechanical, materials, electrical, instrumentation and optics majors. Counting total semiconductor campus roles without separating the two simultaneously overstates design supply and understates the manufacturing shortfall.
In the 2027 postings, the design gate is mostly written at master level and above, with doctorate holders able to apply for architecture and device directions, while expectations of what a graduate can do on day one are also rising. The same candidate therefore has to satisfy two conditions at once: reach the degree gate of the target role list, and have completed a project matching that role while still at university. For institutions, how fast course design tracks line requirements is now a direct variable in graduate employment quality.
The first change is on the university side. Zhengzhou University runs an order-based class with an employer so students can move straight into a production internship; Shandong University has built a joint laboratory with a local IC company where third-year students join real tape-out projects; Wuxi places industry fairs directly on campuses inside IC clusters; East China Normal University has converted core courses into practice-based modules co-taught with a local research centre. What these have in common is compressing the training cycle into the hiring cycle so that a graduate completes one job-fit pass before graduating.
The share of microelectronics graduates staying to work in Shandong rose from 45% in 2023 to 68% in 2025. Henan expanded microelectronics enrolment by half to match the semiconductor base at Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone. Jiangsu places industry fairs on campuses at the industry's location and invites local lead firms first. A shift of that size in a single major over two years usually means job growth at local employers has outpaced graduates' willingness to leave. For employers, recruiting inside a cluster is markedly more efficient than recruiting in a talent-exporting region.
Thirteen- and fourteen-month pay, project bonus, shift allowance, talent housing subsidy and equity are splitting "annual pay" into components that cannot be compared directly. Within the same degree tier and job family, candidates differ by nearly 50% on offers because of research direction, a spread directly observable in the 2027 postings, where the doctoral upper and lower bounds sit nearly CNY 1 million apart. In that structure a single average reflects real pricing less and less, and bands and midpoints are the usable readings.
6. Limits, uncertainty and indicators worth tracking
All four readings carry explicit boundaries, and three of them can be revised on definitional grounds.
Four indicators worth tracking: first, roles per employer at comparable fairs each quarter, to see whether role density is rising or falling; second, the ratio of design roles to process and equipment roles, the most direct reading of mismatch direction; third, the upper bound of master and doctorate pay bands, which moves earlier than any average; fourth, retention rates in cluster provinces, which shape the geography of supply over the next three years. None of the four requires commissioned research. Recording the next round of public fair data on the same basis is enough.
7. What this means for employers hiring in China
This section does not discuss individual companies' recruiting tactics. It sets out what the readings mean for employers and for candidates.
The competitive edge in campus recruiting has shifted from securing candidates at all to writing a role profile specific enough to be matched. The spread across the six postings points to one thing: within a single cohort, few graduates reach the design track while process, equipment and packaging roles stay under-subscribed. Rewriting a job description from a major title into projects and process steps is the most direct way to widen the pool from one or two majors to seven or eight. Second, pay benchmarking has to be done in layers. Benchmarking a national bachelor starting rate against design roles in Shenzhen and Shanghai produces the conclusion that hiring is impossible; splitting job family, degree tier and city into three separate benchmarks produces bands you can act on. Third, front-loading into training costs less than buying people back at market rates later, and the cost of joining an order-based class or co-building a laboratory is usually below the premium paid for a mid-career hire.
For an international employer, position in the Chinese semiconductor talent market depends on the differentiators that sit outside pay structure. Manufacturing pay is comparable across cities, and global grade bands remain competitive at that layer. Design upper bounds are being pushed up by compute and application-specific chip houses and by new-type research institutes, and a globally uniform band usually does not match that layer. Two routes are workable: concentrate roles in manufacturing, equipment, packaging and verification, where pricing is flatter and supply is more plentiful; or put the differentiators ahead of pay, since international project exposure, dual technical and managerial tracks and a steadier working rhythm are the non-pay factors this cohort of candidates raises repeatedly in public surveys. One further point needs care: foreign nationals and local candidates follow separate registration and compliance career tracks in medical devices and regulated hardware, priced differently, and a single band should not be stretched across both.
Three structural features of the Chinese campus calendar also catch international recruiters out, and all three can be planned around. The first is timing. The main cycle runs in September and October of a student's final year and converts into a July start the following year. Employers who begin sourcing in the spring are competing for candidates already committed, which is why participation in the autumn fair matters more here than in markets that recruit on a rolling basis. The second is the tripartite employment agreement, signed by the student, the university and the employer, which sits alongside the offer letter and carries obligations on both sides; offers in China are not a two-party contract, and withdrawal terms differ from most Western jurisdictions. The third is the role of hukou, the household registration system, together with employer-provided housing subsidy. For graduates from outside a cluster city, the ability to settle locally can outweigh a pay difference of a few tens of thousands of yuan, which means a role in Shanghai or Shenzhen is not automatically preferred to one inland once registration and housing are priced in. Building all three into an offer model before the autumn window opens is worth more than adjusting pay after the shortlist has already thinned.
8. Data notes
Nature of data: role counts, attendance and pay bands come from government and university disclosures, published employer postings, platform research reports and listed-company annual reports, cross-checked against each other. Anything derived is flagged in the notes beneath the relevant table.
Period: fair samples run from 4 September to 10 October 2026; employer postings from August to October 2026; recruitment-platform research reflects the post-Spring-Festival hiring season of the first quarter of 2026; industry output and cluster metrics cover full-year 2025 and the first half of 2026.
Pay basis: employer postings are self-reported starting pay, excluding performance pay, year-end bonus and equity; platform figures average open postings; MyCOS figures are actual income six months after graduation. The bases cannot be subtracted directly; this report compares only within a layer.
Role classification: IC design covers digital and analog circuit design; electronic design automation and algorithms covers tool development and numerical algorithms; compound semiconductor process and devices covers silicon carbide, gallium nitride and related process and device research; wafer fab process and equipment engineering covers line-side process, integration and equipment roles.
Degree mapping: diploma, bachelor, master and doctorate are degree tiers and do not correspond to internal job grades. The same degree maps to noticeably different role lists at different employers, so bands are given on a merged basis.
City data: cluster metrics follow municipal government releases or authoritative media reporting on periods that are not fully aligned. Wuxi and Xi'an have no 2027 posting disclosing pay by city, so the corresponding cells are left blank.
Disclaimer: the pay bands here are merged from public information. Actual outcomes vary materially with company size, role direction, individual experience and negotiation, and nothing here constitutes pay or investment advice.

Source tiering. Only four categories are used: government and university disclosures, industry association and recruitment-platform research reports, published employer postings, and listed-company annual reports. Salary aggregator sites, training providers' own sites and unattributed self-media compilations are not used. This report does not cite salary surveys published by competing recruitment firms.
Semiconductor hiring rarely turns on role volume. It turns on the fit between a role list and what candidates have actually done. A design gate set at master level, a process role sited away from where graduates want to live, a shift pattern that rules out half the shortlist: any one of these narrows a pool from hundreds to single digits. SunTzu China runs semiconductor recruiter China mandates across chip design, wafer fabrication, packaging and test, and semiconductor equipment, covering benchmark work on semiconductor recruitment China mandates, supply mapping and targeted search for foreign and local employers hiring in China.
